Best portable blender for smoothies, and how to buy one safely

Which one should you buy?

The Ninja Blast is the best portable blender for most people: RTINGS has tested it, it charges by USB-C and it blends 18 ounces in the cup you drink from. Want it cold for hours? The NutriBullet Flip has an insulated steel tumbler. Before buying any used portable, check CPSC recalls.

What buyers actually worry about

Are portable and personal blenders safe?

Mostly, if you check recalls and skip hot liquids. The BlendJet 2 recall covered 4.8 million units, and the maker has since gone out of business, so its free fix is gone. NutriBullet warns against blending hot ingredients in sealed cups.

Can I blend a protein shake and drink it from the same cup?

Yes, that is what tumbler and personal blenders are for. RTINGS’ protein-shake pick ships with two 24-ounce travel jars, and the BlendBOSS blends in a 26-ounce tumbler.

Will it leave chunks of frozen fruit and ice?

A strong full-size blender won’t; budget and personal machines may need extra liquid or a stir. Consumer Reports’ smoothie score rewards drinks with few chunks, skins or stringy bits.

Portable blenders: questions, answered

Can a portable blender crush ice?

Small amounts. The Ninja Blast listing says it blasts through ice and frozen ingredients; heavy frozen loads drain the battery faster.

How many smoothies do you get per charge?

NutriBullet says the Flip gets 14 or more 30-second cycles per full charge in its own test with water and protein powder.

Is the BlendJet 2 safe to use?

Check your serial number. CPSC says units with serials starting 5201 to 5542 may be recalled for overheating and blades breaking, and notes BlendJet has gone out of business, so the remedy is no longer available. Stop using a recalled unit.

Can I blend hot drinks in a portable blender?

No. Sealed vessels can build pressure; NutriBullet gives that warning for its sealed cups.

Is a portable blender or a personal blender better?

A corded personal blender is stronger and cheaper. Choose portable only if you blend away from an outlet.

What is the best cordless blender for the gym?

The Ninja Blast for simplicity, the Blast Max for a bigger 22 oz detachable cup.
